Before Emily and I blindly started our Rent 2 Rent business, before we spoke to 1,000 people at Wembley Stadium, before we built a community of thousands of loyal supporters… I was a disillusioned, despondent and dog-tired builder.
Always eager to please.
Trying not to think about the future.
But knowing in my heart that things were about as good as they would ever get, unless I did something about it … but I had no idea what? So I just accepted my fate and turned the music up a notch!
This life is NOT a rehearsal!
No one likes change, especially when they are in a comfortable place in life, and I was in a comforable place with my construction company. I had lots of work, a good house, good vechicles and I enjoyed good holidays.
So it was all ‘good’, but I knew that none of it was ever going to be ‘great’! I was working far to hard, not seeing my loved ones enough and those relentless 6am alarms and endless physical work, meant I was on-track for a total burn-out.
But then something just clicked and I had a major mental shift; it was like someone turned the lights on. I was reading a LOT at that time (looking for answers), and one particular quote leapt out at me: “The mass of men are living lives of quiet desperation, and 98% of people are not really that ambitious”.
These were the words of Henry Thoreau, and I felt that Henry had summed up, in one line, exactly how I had been feeling for too many years.
Seminars full of weirdo’s!
I would like to say that it was easy, but it wasn’t. I jumped on the internet (where else?) and started researching property training, and what I found was a mine field of ‘gurus’ all wanting great chunks of my money, in exchange for the ‘secret’ information that would make me rich.
Hmmm, this did not compute!
But I eventually I parted with £100 for a days training in Heathrow.
This seemed like an awful lot of money to me at the time, plus I felt really uncomfortable spending the day with over 100 other people, some of which were definetly oddballs!
But, it also felt like I had been handed the keys to the magic kingdom.
All I had to do now was to turn the key and open the door.
And after wrestling with myself for a few days, I did!
You see I realised that if I wanted change, the first thing I needed to change my own beleif system. I had NEVER paid for any training at that point in time; it was a tough decision to part with £100 and the next step was £2,000, but as I write this, I have now spent over £50,000 on my personal education and development, and I would do it again in the blink of an eye.
Property is often the stepping stone that will take you to where you REALLY want to go
So I went to work and very quickly (I’m talking 6 months) built a £5,000 NET monthly cashflow using the Rent 2 Rent strategy. Learning is important but IMPLIMENTATION is crucial, and working ‘SMART’ changed EVERYTHING for us. During this time I learned:
- That I really enjoyed seeking out Rent 2 Rent deals, building relationships and negotiating with the property owners.
- That if you want to scale a business and make some decent money, you MUST build a team of smart people, otherwise you just become a busy-fool operating a busy-mess.
- Most surprisingly for me, I found that I REALLY wanted to help other people to start their own Rent 2 Rent business, and so along with my daughter Emily, I changed direction to focus on building and educating our community.
